James S. Newby James S. Newby, 70, formerly of Plover and Anchorage, Alaska, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. Memorial services will be held later in the spring. The Pisarski Community Funeral Home and Cremation Center of Plover is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be offered online at www.pisarskifuneralhome.com. Mr. Newby was born Feb. 7, 1939, in Plover, a son of the late Clarence and Marjorie (Rogers) Newby. He attended local schools in the Stevens Point area. He entered the United States Army on Sept. 16, 1958, in Milwaukee. He served with the 34th Armor Co. A. at Fort Lewis during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 15, 1961, at Fort Lewis, Wash. He received the Good Conduct Medal. He was married to Elizabeth "Betty" Kirsch on July 12, 1969, in Anchorage, Alaska. She died in 2004. After their marriage they settled in Anchorage. He worked as an operating engineer and a welder for the oil fields in Anchorage and also worked on the clean-up of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. He retired in 1999. Survivors include five brothers, Melvin (Molly), Kenneth (Carol) and Ben (Darlene), all of Plover, Ramon (Sandra), Junction City, and Roy (Kathleen), Mellon; one half-sister, Cheryl (Bud) Moore, Anchorage, Alaska; one half-brother, Larry (Robin) Newby, Wasilla, Alaska; two stepdaughters, Bonnie (Robert) Day, Anchorage, Alaska, and Barbara Storner, Boise, Idaho; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Donald.
